Understanding the Accommodation Process

4-6 Months Before Classes Begin

  1. Review Policies and Guides
  2. Read the Columbia College Student Accommodation Policy and The Student Guide to Accessibility Services Handbook.
  3. Obtain copies from the Main Office (Bldg. 802) or online.

Start Admission Process

  •    Complete and submit your application form.
  •   Self-identify as having a disability if applicable.
  •   Discuss your program of choice with the Admission Advisor.

Coordinate with Accessibility Services

  •   If you self-identified, the Accessibility Services Advisor will contact you.

Schedule Assessment

  •  The Admission Advisor will book your Entry Assessment if required.
  •  Inform the Admission Advisor if you need accommodations (e.g., extra time).

Provide Documentation

  •  Have suitable documentation ready for your meeting with the Accessibility Services Advisor.

After Meeting Admission Assessment Requirements

  1. Meet with Accessibility Services Advisor
  2. Discuss your documentation and accommodation needs.
  3.  Register with Student Accessibility Services and complete the Registration form.
  4.  Bring relevant disability-related documentation or medical information.

Develop Accommodation Plan

  • Work with the Advisor to create a plan for reasonable and appropriate accommodations.

Request Grant Funding

  •  The Accessibility Advisor will assist in applying for Alberta Student Aid Schedule 4 and forward the forms to the Admission Advisor.

Confirm Funding

  •  Notify your Admission Advisor upon receiving funding approval.
  •  Ensure the process starts early to have funding in place when classes begin.

2-3 Weeks Before the Semester Starts

  1.  Get the Accommodation Letter from the Accessibility Advisor.
  2.  The letter will be sent to your Program Representative and Admission Advisor.

Attend Orientation

  •  Attend Orientation and pick up your texts and materials (if funding is confirmed).

Optional: Arrange Meetings

  •   Speak with your Program Department representative to arrange meetings with facilitators if needed.

 

Ongoing

Regular Meetings

  •  Meet with the Accessibility Services Advisor and Program Department representative as needed.

Access Services

  •  Utilize available services and supports throughout your program.
